Exposure-Based Interventions at Clear Direction Psychological Services

At Clear Direction Psychological Services, led by Dr. Elizabeth Smyth, a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist, we offer specialized, evidence-based exposure interventions. These treatments help clients overcome anxiety and trauma-related challenges by gradually and safely confronting fears and distress in a supportive environment. Our approach is tailored to each individual, empowering clients to build resilience, confidence, and emotional freedom.

What Are Exposure-Based Interventions?
Exposure therapy involves carefully facing distressing thoughts, memories, situations, or sensations that are often avoided. This process helps reduce fear responses over time, retrain the brain’s reactions, and develop effective/practical coping skills.

Who Can Benefit?
Exposure-based therapy is effective for a range of concerns, including:
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms
• Social anxiety and fear of judgment
• Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and OCD-like tendencies such as intrusive thoughts and compulsions
• Specific phobias, like fears of animals or heights
• Panic and generalized anxiety symptoms

How Exposure Therapy Works
Treatment is customized to fit each client’s unique needs. Common techniques include:
Imaginal Exposure: Revisiting traumatic memories or feared scenarios in a safe, therapeutic setting to lessen emotional distress
In Vivo Exposure: Gradual, supported real-life confrontation with feared objects or situations to reduce avoidance
Interoceptive Exposure: Exercises that safely trigger anxiety-related physical sensations to reduce sensitivity and fear of these bodily cues
Response Prevention: For OCD, resisting compulsive behaviors while facing intrusive thoughts to break the anxiety cycle

All therapy is delivered within a trauma-informed framework prioritizing safety, collaboration, and empowerment. Polyvagal Theory and somatic awareness techniques may be incorporated to support nervous system regulation.

Our Goal
Our goal is not to eliminate anxiety completely, but to help clients experience it in manageable ways that promote new learning and increase their ability to handle life’s challenges. Over time, clients regain control, reduce avoidance, and reconnect with meaningful activities and relationships.
