Finding Compassionate Support Through Your Journey of Loss

Grief is the natural emotional response to any type of loss. This might be the death of a loved one, a divorce, or other significant life changes such as:

  • Experiencing trauma that shakes your sense of safety

Feelings of grief can feel overwhelming, and managing these emotions can be challenging. It’s important to allow yourself patience and kindness throughout this process, as grief is a necessary and healthy part of healing. If you’re struggling to cope on your own, or know someone who could benefit from extra support, professional help can make a difference.

Everyone Experiences Grief Differently

There is no set order or timeline for grief. The common idea of moving through stages like anger, denial, and acceptance does not capture everyone’s unique experience. How you grieve depends on your personality, culture, beliefs, and many other personal factors.

Common Symptoms of Grief

Grief impacts many parts of your well-being, and symptoms may include:

Shock and disbelief: Feeling numb, having difficulty accepting the loss, or expecting to see the person again

Sadness: Crying, emptiness, despair, yearning, or loneliness

Guilt: Regretting things unsaid, feeling responsible for the loss, or shame for feeling relief

Anger: Blaming others or feeling injustice

Fear and anxiety: Feeling helpless, insecure, or experiencing panic attacks

Physical symptoms: Fatigue, nausea, changes in weight, aches and pains, or insomnia

Coping and Healing with Support

An important part of healing is knowing you are not alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family, faith communities, or bereavement groups for connection and comfort. Caring for your body—through eating well, getting rest, and gentle exercise—is also vital, even when grief makes it difficult.

If you find these strategies aren’t enough, working with a licensed psychologist can provide the guidance and support you need. I am Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Smyth, a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in grief therapy. Together, we will work to process your intense emotions in a safe, secure, and non-judgmental space.
